How I Shopped My Gardening Tools

1. Compost Tumblers

When I decided to grow vegetables in my garden, I knew I didn’t want to rely on commercial fertilizers. Instead, I planned to do composting with leftovers, leaves, and other rubbish. Not only would this save me money, but it’s also better for the environment.

Now I’m pleased to stop sending as much garbage to the landfill, and I’m glad I’m not adding non-organic chemicals to the ground.

A while back, I began shopping for the best compost tumbler to place in my yard. I found three composters that had qualities I liked. I’ll begin this review by telling you now about the best tumbling composter that I chose for my home.

Top 3 Compost Tumblers

1. Yimby Tumbler Composter

2. Good Ideas CW-2X12 Senior Wizard Dual Tumbler Compost Bin

3. Envirocycle Composting Tumbler Bin and Compost Tea Maker

Best Compost Tumblers Reviews

Yimby Tumbler Composter

Yimby Tumbler Composter - Best Compost Tumbler Reviews

The Yimby Tumbler Composter holds up to 37 gallons of compost. That translates to 5 cubic feet total. It has two composting chambers, so I always have fertilizer ready when I need it. And it’s a lot more convenient than managing a pile of compost in the yard.

One of the features I appreciate about the Yimby is that it stands a couple of feet off the ground on a steel frame. That fact makes it easier to reach without a lot of bending.

Then, its openings are large enough for me to use yard waste bags or leaf scoops to pour in grass clippings, mulch, egg shells, and coffee grounds. There are also many perforations that allow air to circulate.

The manufacturer recommends rotating the tumbler 5 to 6 times every couple of days. They say the composter can produce fertilizer in as little as two weeks if you place it in hot sunshine. While there are no handles, there are plenty of places to grip the barrel for turning. And the fins inside the barrel help break up clumps as you spin it.

One of the concerns I had about purchasing this type of composting tumbler was BPA in the plastic. But the Yimby is made of recycled polypropylene that is BPA-free and doesn’t degrade in sunlight.

The only downside to this composting tumbler is the fact that it needs to be assembled when it arrives. You’ll want to plan on taking 30 minutes to an hour to finish the process.

Pros

  • The plastic is BPA – free
  • Tumbler holds up to 37 gallons or 5 ft.³
  • Galvanized steel frame raises the composter 2 feet off the ground
  • Two individual chambers

Cons

  • Assembly is required

While I chose the Yimby compost tumbler for my garden, you might find that one of the next two models suits your needs better.

Good Ideas CW-2X12 Senior Wizard Dual Tumbler Compost Bin

Good Ideas CW-2X12 Senior Wizard Dual Tumbler Compost Bin

The Good Ideas Senior Wizard compost bin offers more than double the capacity of the Yimby. It has two chambers with 5.5 cubic feet per side. And one of its highlights is that it arrives fully assembled.

The manufacturer states that their product is made in the United States with “FDA – approved materials.” Since I was unable to discover exactly what those materials are, I decided against buying this composter although it has an appealing design.

On the bright side, the tumbler openings are sealed with lids you need to turn to open. This fact is an advantage if you need to protect your compost from animals or curious small children. Good Ideas offers a one-year limited warranty.

Pros

  • Large capacity of 11 ft.³
  • No assembly required
  • Two individual chambers
  • Lids turn instead of slide
  • FDA – approved components used in its construction
  • One-year limited warranty

Cons

  • No explanation about whether the plastic is BPA – free

My final selection is available in two sizes. The one I chose to review is the larger of the two.

Envirocycle Composting Tumbler Bin and Compost Tea Maker

Envirocycle Composting Tumbler Bin and Compost Tea Maker

Envirocycle optimistically calls their tumbler bin “the most beautiful composter in the world.” It has a sleek design that would fit into almost any yard. You can also select from either black or hot pink. The only downside is that the tumbler consists of only one chamber, not two. But that chamber can hold up to 35 gallons.

One of the best features of this composter is the fact that it built from BPA – free food safe plastic. This material, which happens to be recycled and purified HDPE, is resistant to ultraviolet light. As a result, the tumbler should last for years of service.

Similar to the model from Good Ideas, you won’t need to do any assembly when the tumbler arrives. And the Envirocycle has a clear advantage over the prior two composting bins. It is designed to create both solid compost and compost tea, or liquid fertilizer. The tea drips down into the base of the drum, where you can harvest it from time to time. Conversely, you can let the liquid drain into the ground instead.

Pros

  • Sold in either 17 or 35-gallon capacities
  • Comes in black or hot pink
  • No assembly required
  • Collects compost tea in the base
  • Made of recycled HDPE that is BPA-free

Cons

  • Only one chamber, not two

Now that you see the three best composting bins, I’ll give you insight into why I chose each one.

Choosing the best compost tumbler

You may have guessed already that one of my primary concerns was whether the plastic of the compost tumbler would be free of hazardous chemicals. But I also had other criteria in mind.

  • BPA-free plastic
  • Large enough capacity for my garden
  • Ease of use

Besides the fact that I wanted plastic that wouldn’t pass on toxins to my garden, I desired a compost bin that would be easy to use. I liked the Yimby because it has two chambers for a total of 37 gallons of compost. It’s also taller and easier for me to reach without a lot of bending. It saves my back when I need to turn it or deposit more rubbish in it.

On the other hand, you may prefer the bin from Good Ideas if you have small children since its lids don’t slide, but rather turn. Or if you like to use compost tea in your garden, you might like the Envirocycle tumbler best of all.

Conclusion

Composting is an efficient way to reduce the amount of garbage your household produces and turns it into something useful. Making your own fertilizer can save you money, too.

Grass clippings and leaves from your garden are an essential part of making compost. Please take a look at my reviews of the best leaf scoops and reusable yard waste bags to help you save time and cut costs on yard work as well.

2. Reusable Yard Waste Bag

I like to keep my yard tidy, and it’s a never-ending job. But one of the best tools I’ve purchased to help me is a yard waste bag. Instead of spending cash on disposable trash sacks, I am saving money and helping protect the environment.

In this article, I’m going to reveal my three top picks for the best yard waste bags. Since I invested in these, I haven’t had to deal with bags breaking and spilling their contents at the worst time. I’ll begin with the brand I chose for my own home.

Top 3 Yard Waste Bags

1. Fiskars 30 Gallon Kangaroo Gardening Bag (94056949)

2. GardenMate 2-Pack 106 Gallons Garden Waste Bags

3. WORX WA0030 Landscaping 26-Gallon Spring Bucket Yard Bag

If you do a lot of work in your garden, you may also like to see my reviews of both composting tumblers and leaf scoops.

Best Reusable Yard Waste Bag Reviews

Fiskars 30 Gallon Kangaroo Gardening Bag

You may recognize the brand Fiskars. Their reputation is one of the reasons I took a closer look at their Kangaroo Gardening Bag. It holds 30 gallons, but it folds down to a diminutive 3-inch height for storage. And since it is made of vinyl – coated polyester, it resists mildew and is difficult to damage.

When fully expanded, this reusable sack pops up to stand 23 ¾ inches tall and measures 22.8 inches in diameter. It’s the perfect size for me to use when raking leaves. The fact that it has sturdy nylon handles makes it even more appealing because it’s easy to carry to the compost bin.

While you’ll find the Kangaroo Gardening Bag sold in the lawn and garden section, you can use it for many other purposes. It can even serve as a laundry bag in a pinch. And it comes with a lifetime warranty from Fiskars.

Pros

  • Vinyl – coated polyester is resistant to damage and mildew
  • Holds 30 gallons
  • Handles for transport
  • Compresses down to 3 inches tall for storage
  • Covered by a lifetime warranty

Cons

  • No negatives so far

While I’ve been enjoying using the Fiskars Kangaroo Gardening Bag, I can imagine that you might need a larger container for your yard work.

GardenMate 2-Pack Garden Waste Bags

GardenMate 2-Pack Garden Waste Bags

If you prefer large bags for collecting yard waste, you may like this two-pack from GardenMate. Together they can hold over 200 gallons of debris or up to 150 pounds per bag. They are made of polypropylene plastic, similar to a tarp, which makes them nearly impregnable to water and quite strong.

While the bags come with handles and a hoop to stiffen the rim, they tend to slump over if you miss the mark while you’re loading them. On the other hand, GardenMate offers 100% satisfaction money-back guarantee so you can give them a try to see what you think.

Pros

  • Polypropylene material is coated to resist water and damage
  • Each bag holds 106 gallons or up to 150 pounds
  • Handles for transport
  • A loop sewn into the rim keeps the lip open while in use
  • Comes with 100% money-back guarantee

Cons

  • Sack may not remain upright while loading

On the other hand, size isn’t everything. My final choice for yard waste bag is this one below. You may decide that it’s easier on your back to tote around less weight.

WORX WA0030 Landscaping 26-Gallon Spring Bucket Yard Bag

WORX WA0030 Landscaping 26-Gallon Spring Bucket Yard Bag

The WORX Spring Bucket Yard Bag only holds 26 gallons of clipping or weeds, but that may be all you need for a small job. It’s able to stand upright and ready to use just like the Fiskars model I have, and it collapses down for compact storage.

When open, the Spring Bucket measures almost 2 feet tall and 18 inches in diameter. It’s made of mildew – resistant canvas and has carrying handles on either side.

WORX advertises the bag as being compatible with their leaf mulcher and yard vacuums, but some users have reported that it’s not the best fit. Still, if all you want is a lightweight, refillable sack to help you collect debris from the yard, this is a good choice.

Pros

  • Canvas construction with handles
  • Holds 26 gallons
  • Compresses down to 3 inches in height for storage
  • Advertised as a companion accessory for WORX vacuums and mulcher

Cons

  • Canvas may absorb moisture, be sure to let it dry before storage

Some customers described it as awkward for use with WORX yard equipment

Now that you’ve seen my top three choices for reusable yard waste bags let me show you how I came to select them.

Criteria to choose the best yard waste bag

I always have some features in mind when I begin researching a purchase. In the case of choosing a sack to help me move around grass clippings and leaves, I considered the following:

  • Capacity
  • Material
  • Ability to store it neatly

While occasionally the tremendous capacity of the GardenMate waste bags would come in handy, I opted for a smaller solution in the Fiskars 30 – gallon bag. I chose it because its material wasn’t likely to get soaking wet, retain odors, or become stained. I also appreciate how easy it is to collapse it and tuck it away for storage.

If you suffer from back problems, you may prefer the smaller capacity bag from WORX. Do keep in mind that since it’s canvas, it’s not best for dealing with wet foliage.

Conclusion

Since I began doing yard work at home, I’ve bought a few tools that have saved me a lot of time and effort. One is the eco-friendly yard waste bag in this review. Now I’m glad I don’t have to resort to using disposable plastic bags when I work in the garden.

Instead, the Fiskars Kangaroo is handy for when I want to put waste in the compost bin, and it’s straightforward to fill up with my leaf scoops. If you’re curious about those items too, see my reviews about them to learn more.

3. Best Leaf Scoops

While the traditional method of cleaning up leaves with a rake and gloves gets the work done, you might enjoy using leaf scoops to make the job go faster. Often, the most awkward part of dealing with leaves is collecting them to put in a yard waste bag. These handy scoops will help you dispose of fallen foliage more efficiently.

As an extension of your hands, leaf scoops enable you to gather up large amounts of leaves, twigs, and pine needles. Some types of scoops will protect your skin even if you aren’t wearing gloves. For example, the brand I chose for my home allows me to work glove-free. That’s very convenient when I want to fill my compost tumbler with mulch or avoid touching poison sumac. Let me tell you more about the ones I chose for my home below.

Top 3 Leaf Scoops Reviews

1. ReLeaf Leaf Scoops from Gardease

2. TABOR TOOLS Leaf Scoops

3. Midwest Gloves & Gear Lawn Claws Garden and Yard Leaf Scoops

Best Leaf Scoops Reviews

ReLeaf Leaf Scoops from Gardease

ReLeaf Leaf Scoops from Gardease - Best Leaf Scoops Reviews

ReLeaf describes their tool as “oversize leaf claws.” That’s an apt description for these plastic clamshells. To wear them, just slip your hands under the brace on the back and grasp the grip. On the front side, the shell covers the palm of your hands. I appreciate this design every time I need to pick up prickly weeds because it protects my hands. And do keep in mind that your wrist will be exposed, but if you use caution, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Not only do the ReLeaf scoops help me clean up a pile of leaves quickly, they serve as a miniature bucket when I need to transport food waste to the compost, or even clean up after the dog. After a quick squirt with the garden hose, they are clean and ready for action again.

There are other features of the ReLeaf claws that I find useful. One is that they have a hole for hanging on a hook or nail, and they stack together. These attributes make them simple to store out of the way.

Pros

  • Increase the user’s ability to scoop up foliage for removal
  • Protect hands from pokes, scratches, and mess
  • Convenient for transporting items or cleaning up after pets
  • Store neatly

Cons

  • None so far

Depending on your needs, you may like one of these other two tools below better than the ReLeaf brand. Each one has its advantages.

TABOR TOOLS Leaf Scoops

TABOR TOOLS Leaf Scoops

Instead of a protective molded grip like the ReLeaf claws, the leaf scoops made by Tabor Tools have an open design. Depending on the mobility of your hands, you might prefer these scoops because they allow you to work by gripping the handlebar in a fist or even extending your fingers to brace the outside.

Similar to the other leaf claws, these are lightweight and made of plastic. The plastic is UV-resistant, an important feature when you work a lot in the sunshine. Finally, they have a hole for hanging, and they nestle together for storage.

Pros

  • Augment the user’s ability to scoop up leaves or debris for removal
  • Useful for transporting items or cleaning up after pets
  • Store compactly

Cons

  • Don’t protect hands as well as the ReLeaf design

As much as I liked the ReLeaf and the Tabor Tools scoops, I found another pair that might interest you below.

Midwest Gloves & Gear Lawn Claws Garden and Yard Leaf Scoops

Midwest Gloves & Gear Lawn Claws Garden and Yard Leaf Scoops

Midwest Gloves and Gear also sell plastic lawn claws, and theirs come in three colors. The edges of these tools have teeth, so you could use them for raking a small area. Their handles are elastic bands. Just slip your hand through the loops on the exterior of the scoops, and your hands are completely protected from the material you gather.

So far, the only negative I’ve heard about this brand of leaf scoops is that the band tends to stretch out with use. But if you have trouble with flexibility in your hands, you may appreciate this style of the tool even more than the other models above.

Pros

  • Good for collecting leaves and rubbish
  • Teeth allow for a little raking on the spot
  • Store very compactly by stacking or hanging

Cons

  • Elastic bands that serve as handles stretch out over time

To wrap up, I’d like to tell you about the criteria I used to choose the best leaf claws for my yard.

How to choose the best leaf scoops

They may seem like a simple tool, but selecting the right kind of leaf scoop will make the difference as to whether you get the most out of them, or they end up gathering dust in the shed.

When shopping, I looked at these features:

  • Ease of use (mainly the grip style)
  • Whether they protected my hands
  • If they stored compactly

Of course, you may also be interested in the color, or whether they resist ultraviolet light. I was most interested in whether the leaf scoops would be comfortable to use and if I could work with, or without gloves. Finally, since I am opposed to cluttering in my home, I preferred a style that would be easy to store. The ReLeaf Scoops meet all my requirements very well.

Conclusion

As I’ve stepped up my yard care this year, I appreciate the convenience of using leaf scoops. The ones I choose make it straightforward to load the debris into a yard waste bag, or even my compost bin. If you’re thinking about getting better tools for your garden, take a look at my other reviews to see what I discovered.

4. Step Ladder

Every home needs a ladder to help in making repairs, cleaning, and arranging stored items. It’s useful to have one tall enough and sufficiently strong for your needs, but portable for everyday use.

Top 3 Best Step Ladders In This Review

1. OxGord Aluminum Folding Scaffold Multi-Purpose Ladder 12.5-Feet / 350 lb

2. Flip-N-Lite 300-Pound Duty Rating 6-foot Stepladder with Platform

3. Giantex New HD 3 Step Ladder Platform Folding Stool 330 LBS Capacity

At my home, it was time to upgrade my old wobbly wooden stepladder to something new, strong, and lightweight.

After considering the best options, I purchased an aluminum multi-purpose ladder to help me with all my tasks around the house.

I’d like to tell you more about it below.

Best Step Ladders Reviews

OxGord Aluminum Folding Scaffold Multi-Purpose Ladder

When I found the OxGord Folding Scaffold Multi-Purpose Ladder, I was delighted.

It folds into several positions so I can use it as a telescoping ladder, a twin stepladder, and a base for scaffolding.

At its tallest extension, the ladder reaches a height of 12.5 feet so I can clean gutters. When folded up, it’s only 3.33 feet tall so it fits in a small storage space.

It weighs 24 pounds, which makes it light enough to move around the house and yard for all the jobs I want to do.

The hinges have levers that automatically lock into place, so it’s easy to set up the ladder just how I want it. When it’s time to take it down, all I have to do is flip up the levers and unlock the hinges to fold the ladder.

The OxGord is made from aluminum, so it will never rust. Although this is a lightweight metal, the ladder supports up to 350 pounds of weight. Unfortunately, it does not have an official ANSI safety rating. There is only a 60-day warranty.

These two factors almost made me bypass this ladder for one of the other two I’ll describe below, but finally, I ended up choosing it for my home because of two factors:

One, the customer reviews of this ladder were generally positive.

Two, the company that sells them also has mostly positive reviews about their service and the other products they sell.

I decided to take a chance on it and see how it worked out around the house. So far, I’ve used it in three ways.

First, the scaffold position creates about a 6-foot long workspace about three feet off the ground. With a plank secured on top, it works great for painting a ceiling.

Two, the 6-foot tall stepladder position is perfect for changing a light bulb or dusting off a ceiling fan. The ladder opens up into an inverted “V” shape for this purpose.

Three, the full extension of the ladder out to 12.5 feet let me clean the house gutters. The top props against the roof just like a telescoping ladder.

It comes with two wide stabilizer bars with feet for the bottom of the ladder. The rungs are a foot wide. The thickness of each rung is typical for an aluminum ladder, just enough to support the arch of my foot when I stand on it.

Although the rungs have a texture on them, they are slippery when wet, just like any aluminum ladder would be.

So far the OxGord ladder is a big help around the house. I can imagine that it will continue to be useful for years to come.

Pros

  • Locks into various positions for a variety of tasks
  • Locking hinges
  • Stabilizers for the feet
  • Resistant to rust
  • Lightweight
  • Folds up small for storage

Cons

  • No ANSI rating, no safety certifications
  • 60-day warranty only
  • Slippery when wet

If you don’t need all the functionality of the OxGord Multi-Purpose ladder but are searching for a simple stepladder instead, you might enjoy one of the other two models I considered purchasing.

Flip-N-Lite 300-Pound Duty Rating 6-foot Stepladder with Platform

Little Giant makes the Flip-N-Lite 6-foot Stepladder to support up to 300 pounds of weight.

It meets OSHA standards for safety and has a Type 1A ANSI rating. This is the certification that I had looked for but didn’t find on the OxGord ladder.

Although this aluminum ladder is very strong, it only weighs 14 pounds itself.

Its hinged design makes it easy to open and close with just one hand. But like the OxGord, if it gets wet, the three metal bottom rungs can be slippery underfoot.

A very nice feature of the Flip-N-Lite’s design is the large platform at the top. It measures 14.25 by 12 inches in size and can hold tools or a person standing on it. The ladder frame extends up past the platform to provide more support

The ladder frame extends up past the platform to provide more support with a handrail.

The fourth step is the large platform. It’s 45 inches off the floor. That’s as high as this ladder goes, and it’s the main reason I didn’t purchase it.

If you need something taller, please take a look at the OxGord ladder I’m using at home.

Pros

  • Supports up to 300 pounds of weight
  • ANSI Type 1A rating
  • Lightweight at just 14 pounds
  • Hinged design is easy to open with one hand
  • A large platform at the top to hold tools or a person standing
  • and rail at the top

Cons

  • Stepladder functionality only
  • Top step is only 45 inches from the ground

If you would like wider rungs for comfort or safety, please take a look at the next stepladder below.

Giantex New Heavy-Duty 3-Step Ladder Platform Folding Stool With Tray

The 3-Step Ladder from Giantex is a convenient step-stool for reaching high shelves.

The top platform isn’t for standing and doesn’t look like the rest of the steps. It has grooves to hold various tools and a bucket.

The stepladder can support up to 330 pounds, but it doesn’t have an official ANSI rating.

The ladder opens and folds up easily. When folded for storage or transport, it’s only 2.8 inches thick and 57.3 inches tall. It weighs about 16 pounds.

Each of the three steps is roomy and comfortable to stand on, with the top step the largest of all. It measures 13.8 by 13.8 inches and it’s 27.2 inches off the ground.

There is a handrail that extends over the top of the ladder. Its limited height was the main factor why I didn’t buy this one for my home.

This is a great ladder for persons with limited mobility because the steps are large. The top platform keeps cleaning materials and tools right at hand.

Pros

  • Three large steps, with the top step very roomy for standing upon
  • Handrail extends above the top step and platform
  • Supports up to 330 pounds
  • A platform on top holds tools or a bucket
  • Folds up thin to fit in a narrow storage space

Cons

  • No official safety rating
  • Top step is only 27.2 inches off the ground

4 Factors To Choose The Best Step Ladder

Shopping for the right step ladder can be a little tricky. I did a lot of research that included learning about product features and reading user reviews.

I took some measurements around the house and thought about why I needed a ladder. Then I decided on a few criteria to help me choose the best one for my needs. Here they are:

  • Sufficient height to complete tasks
  • Portability and storage
  • Comfortable and easy to use
  • Safety rating or weight allowance

I hoped to find a versatile stepladder that would have sufficient height to allow me to complete all my tasks with one tool.

Portability and storage are always factors for me. I don’t like clutter and I want to be able to use my tools without straining my back.

A ladder that is comfortable and easy to use means I won’t put off doing the jobs I need to do.

I wanted a ladder that would have a safety rating or weight allowance high enough that it would cover anyone in my family that might need to use it.

In Closing

If you’re looking for the best step ladder for your home, I hope these reviews help you find the one you want. In conclusion, here is a quick summary of the top features of each one in this review:

The OxGord Folding Scaffold Multi-Purpose Ladder locks into various positions to serve seven functions. It extends out to 12.5 feet or can be used as a 6-foot stepladder, or a 3-foot high scaffold. It supports up to 350 pounds and is made from rust-proof aluminum.

The Little Giant Flip-N-Lite 6-foot Stepladder has a large platform at the top for standing or holding tools. It’s 45 inches off the floor. The handrail extends up beyond the top step for security. The ladder easily folds up to fit in a narrow space for storage and it only weighs 14 pounds.

The 3-Step Ladder from Giantex is a handy step-stool with large steps and a tool or bucket platform at the top. The highest rung is a roomy platform over a square foot in size. It’s 27.2 inches off the floor, ideal for tasks inside the home.

Recommendation

I choose my new stepladder based on its ability to serve as a 12.5-foot regular ladder, a 6-foot stepladder, and a scaffold. If this kind of multi-purpose tool appeals to you, consider getting the OxGord ladder.

If you want a folding stepladder that can be stored in a narrow space, take a look at both the Flip-N-Lite from Little Giant and the 3-Step Ladder from Giantex. The Flip-N-Lite reaches a top height of 45 inches while the Giantex goes up to 27.2 inches.

If you prefer wide steps and a large standing platform, the Giantex 3-Step Ladder offers those features. It has a place to keep your cleaning supplies and tools right at hand.

Thank you for reading these reviews today. Stepladders are a tool needed in just about every home. I hope this guide has helped you narrow down your selection to choose your new one today.

5. Bulb Planter

In general, we have four groups of bulb planter with my top pick as below:

Top 4 Bulb Planters In This Review

1. Short-Handled portable handle: Fiskars Bulb Transplanter (7983)

2. Short-Handled fixed handle: DeWit Bulb Planter with Short Handle

3. Long-Handled, short bulb digger: Yard Butler SP-33 Zoysia Sod Plugger

4. Long-Handled, long bulb digger: ProPlugger 5-In-1

If you like planting and gardening, you probably already know bulb planter as the best tool for the cultivation of bulb trees.

In the beginning, when I renovated my garden, I had dedicated a piece of front-right corner to plant the bulb flowers such as gladiolus and tulip because I love them. However, plant and move this type of flower was not easy for me, I had to spend a lot of time and effort kneeling on the wet and dirty ground to dig the holes with a trowel or a shovel.

Fortunately, I researched on the Internet and found some tools can resolve the problems, a garden kneeler, and 2 bulb planters are three of the best gardening tools I’m using to crop and take care my bulb flowers.

Today, I try to help you to find the best bulb planter with my short review below.

Before we go further, I want to emphasize that bulb planter is a simple garden tool for a gardener (like me) to plant bulb trees and flowers in a small garden. If you are a professional farmer who has a specializing farm growing flowers for sale, you should find a bulb planter machine, not this manual one.

You can see, bulb planter is known as a cheap gardening tool (see the price on Amazon), it’s simple and it’s extremely efficient. Even though, you should choose the best one in a ton of bulb planters has been sold in the market. Why not, right?

Short-Handled Bulb Planter

Short-Handled Bulb Planter is made of a steel bulb digger with a one-hand wooden or plastic handle. It’s small and not really solid, thus, you should use it for soft soil or plant or move trees in pots, otherwise, it will be bent or broken.

The most advantages of this type of bulb planter that it’s easy to use and the price is very cheap.

There are 2 types of handle corresponding to two different features, the fixed and portable.

Portable Handle Short-handled Bulb Planter

This type of bulb planter has a portable plastic handle consists of 2 parts male and female with a spring mounted inside that allow you change the size of the digger make it’s easy to release the soil after you dig.

You can use a bulb planter portable short-Handled as follows:

  • Squeeze the male part of the handle with thumb
  • Plug the bulb planter to the ground and twist slightly
  • Release your thumb and pick the planter off from the ground
  • Squeeze the male part of handle again to release the soil.

It’s very easy and flexible to use, right.

The downside of this type of bulb planter that it is easy to be bent when you dig hard soil because the digger part is not consistent.

Fixed Handle Short-handled Bulb Planter

Even this also a short-handled bulb planter, the components in a fixed planter are different than a portable’s. It’s not flexible, hence, you cannot change the size of the digger part, but this is also a plus point of this bulb planter as it is more solid compared to the portable one.

You can find many short-handled bulb planters on the market with various types with many price points, from my point of view, I strongly recommend you the Bulb Transplanter Fiskars (7983) since it is an awesome gardening tool with a reasonable price.

Long-Handled Bulb Planter

Long-Handled bulb planter has a very simple structure consisting of bulb digger with a long handle that allows you to stand and dig holes for bulb planting.

This type of bulb planter is more consistent than the short-handled one, the lower part is designed with pedals can be used to dig with one foot (event two feet).

You can use Long Handled bulb planter to dig hard soils without worrying of fracture.

There are many forms of the handle, T-handle, O-Handle and some other customization forms like “7” or “?”, the handle is made of steel or wood with many style and color for your choice.

We have two kinds of Long-handled bulb planter: short bulb digger and long bulb digger.

Short Bulb Digger

This type has a short pharmacological bulb digger attached to the body, one of the limitations of this kind that you can just dig a hole at once, but it is appropriate when you want to dig and move seedlings trees, you will be able to observe it and avoid break your trees.

Long Bulb Digger

The body of a long bulb planter is also a bulb digger, you can dig several holes in a row until the tube (body) is filled, then you discharge if and continue to dig.

The most disadvantage of this type of bulb planter that you won’t observe inside the body when you dig, hence, you may damage your trees.

There’s also a further limitation of the long bulb digger is slightly difficult to clean after use. However, it is important that you have clean the garden tools after use as it’s needed to keep long last the tools.

My pick and suggestion

I am using 2 bulb planters, a long-handled 5-In-1 ProPlugger (with depth rings) and Fiskars Bulb Transplanter (7983) – a short-handled portable-handle bulb planter – since they are the best bulb planters in my opinion.

Since the bulb planter is a very simple tool, I will not write particularly detailed reviews all specific for each product. You just need to know the basic information above and that’s enough for you to be able to choose appropriate products for your needs.

Personally, I use a Long-handled bulb planter to dig holes and use for hard ground, and a Short-handled one for excavation as well as plant bulb trees in pots.

There are many types of bulb planter in the market, you can find more than 20 types of bulb planter on Amazon with a variety of designs and different colors.

You can view the list of bulb planter with the specification of material, color, style, and price.

I hope this short review can help you to find the best bulb planter for your garden work and wish you get a nice garden with flowers from bulbs.
