I purchased the best countertop ice maker for our home and it’s been an essential addition to our kitchen ever since.
My family enjoys having lots of ice available for cold drinks and smoothies. They love making homemade ice cream and Slurpees.

Della Stainless Steel Portable Countertop Icemaker

The Della Stainless Steel Portable Countertop Icemaker is the ideal ice machine for my family.
It’s handy for everyday use, and especially nice when we have parties. We always have fresh ice ready to use, day or night.
One of the reasons I choose Della is because it makes up to 48 pounds of ice a day. That may sound like a lot, but it’s perfect for my active family. We never run out and never have to resort to freezing trays of water as a backup.
In fact, my wife loves having extra space in the freezer now that there aren’t any ice trays in the way.
We like that the Della can make small, medium, and large cubes. We usually leave it on the small cube setting because we blend the ice into smoothies. The medium and large cubes are nice for cooling down drinks.
Each batch of ice, or twelve cubes, is ready in about six minutes; way faster than it could be frozen in a freezer tray.
The control panel on Della ice maker is very straightforward.
There are a power button and selectors for the different cube sizes. The LED lights tell if the ice maker is on, if the ice is ready, and if it needs more water. Everyone in my family understands how to use it because it’s very simple.
The reservoir holds a half gallon at a time. We fill it with pure filtered water from our APEC Reverse Osmosis system.
The APEC system has a kit that can link the filter to a refrigerator ice maker, but unfortunately not to the Della ice maker. The reservoir has to be filled manually.
On the good side, any ice that melts inside the ice maker is recycled back into ice all over again. If we ever had to empty out the ice maker to store it or take it somewhere, there is a small drain outlet at the bottom.
The Della looks very modern and fits right into my kitchen with its stainless steel exterior. It matches my stainless steel iTouchless trash can and takes up minimal space on the counter. It also comes with its own scoop for the ice.
- Creates up to 48 pounds of ice per day
- Takes just 6 minutes for each batch
- Makes small, medium, and large cubes
- Very simple to operate
- Comes with an ice scoop
- Warns if the water reservoir needs a refill
- Recycles melted ice water back into ice cubes
- Has a drain to empty out water if needed
- Measures just 14 by 17 by 16-3/4 inches so it doesn’t use a lot of countertop space
- CSA, ETL, and UL-Listed for safety
- Can’t be hooked up directly to a water source, has to be filled manually
While I was looking for the perfect ice maker for my home, I found two others that I liked. I’d like to describe them to you below.
Avalon Bay AB-ICE26S Portable Ice Maker
[product_show purl=”http://amzn.to/2cnISOW” ptitle=”Avalon Bay AB-ICE26S Portable Ice Maker” prating=”3.5″ pimgurl=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81cbjaGqDFL._SX370_.jpg” pdes=”The Avalon Bay AB-ICE26S Countertop Portable Ice Maker creates fresh ice in six to thirteen minutes”]
The Avalon Bay AB-ICE26S Countertop Portable Ice Maker creates fresh ice in six to thirteen minutes.
Each batch of ice is only 9 cubes compared to a dozen from the Della. It can freeze up to 26 pounds total per day. This just wasn’t enough for my busy family, so I didn’t purchase the Avalon Bay.
Like the Della, this ice maker has a simple control panel. You can choose between small or large cubes. One light advises when the ice is ready and another when the water reservoir needs filling.
Unfortunately, this is another ice maker that needs manual refills. You can’t hook it up directly to a water filtration system.
If you wanted to take the Avalon Bay ice maker to an event, it has a handy feature. There is a drain in the bottom that lets the leftover water and ice melt out without having to turn the machine upside down to empty it. It also comes with its own scoop.
Some users have complained that this ice maker is noisy, while others said it broke down after a short amount of use. It does come with a 12-month limited warranty and there are three colors available (>>> See the color options).
- Makes a new batch of ice in about 6 to 13 minutes
- Freezes up to 26 pounds a day
- Simple control panel with LED light alerts
- Two cube sizes
- Has a drain at the bottom for easy cleaning
- Reuses meltwater to make more ice
- 12-month warranty
- Three colors available
- Only two cube sizes
- Only 9 cubes in each batch
- Some users have experienced breakdowns and complained of noise
Besides the Avalon Bay, there is another ice maker that creates up to 26 pounds a day. I’d like to tell you about it below.
Igloo ICE103 Counter Top Ice Maker with Over-Sized Ice Bucket
[product_show purl=”http://amzn.to/2cSCGSS” ptitle=”Igloo ICE103 Counter Top Ice Maker with Over-Sized Ice Bucket” prating=”3.4″ pimgurl=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81bZVi0s79L._SX370_.jpg” pdes=”One of the nice features on this model is that it comes with a removable ice basket. The basket holds 2.2 pounds of ice.”]
Igloo makes more than just coolers. They also make the ICE103 Countertop Ice Maker.
Like the one from Avalon Bay, it makes up to 26 pounds of ice per day. It takes about six minutes for a batch. Like the Della in my home, you can choose between small, medium, and large cubes.
Since it’s a portable ice maker, there’s no way to link it to a water filtration system. You’ll have to fill its reservoir manually. But if you leave the ice in it and it melts, the Igloo reuses the water to make more ice.
The control panel is easy to use. It only takes two button pushes to get it started making ice.
Like the other two ice makers in this review, the Igloo has LED lights to indicate when the ice is ready and when the water is low. It also has a drain at the bottom.
One of the nice features of this model is that it comes with a removable ice basket. The basket holds 2.2 pounds of ice. This means you can let the basket filled with a few batches and transport it all at once instead of moving it with the scoop.
The ICE103 comes with a one-year warranty. Igloo sells it in only one color: stainless steel.
- Provides up to 26 pounds of ice per day
- Choose between small, medium, and large cubes
- Easy-to-use control panel with LED light alerts
- Reuses meltwater to make more ice
- Drain at the bottom to release extra water if desired
- Comes with scoop and removable ice basket
- 1-year limited warranty
- The only con would be if you happened to want more ice than it can make in a day
- Only one color
4 Criteria for choosing the best ice maker for your home
Whenever I shop online, I do a lot of research. I check into the details of each product and read a lot of user reviews.
As I looked at the ice makers in this review, certain things stood out. Based on those qualities, I made a list of these criteria to help me choose the best one for my home.
- Variety of cube sizes
- Design matches with my kitchen
First, I wanted an ice maker that has the capacity to keep up with the demands of people in my home. The Della can do this for my family while the other two cannot.
Second, the whole point was to have ice faster than my freezer could make. All of the ice makers in this review have enough speed for my needs. All produce cubes within 6 to 10 minutes.
Maybe cube size won’t matter as much to you, but it did to me. I wanted ice for a variety of purposes and it is convenient to have a machine with the ability to select a size.
Finally, although it wasn’t essential, I’m glad the Della ice maker matches the design of my kitchen. It fits in with the other appliances. The Avalon Bay comes in a variety of colors in case you would prefer something other than stainless steel.
My family loves having fresh ice ready in just a few minutes. It’s very convenient for us. The Della ice maker is simple enough that everyone at home can use it whenever they want. This is the best countertop ice maker in my opinion.
Please note that if you would prefer to use your refrigerator’s ice maker, you may be able to link it to a water filtration system.
For example, we have the APEC ROES-PH75 and APEC sells an ice maker kit to connect it. That way you would have pure ice without having to fill an ice maker by hand.
But if your refrigerator’s built-in ice maker just can’t keep up with demand, a portable ice maker may be just what you need.
Here is a quick summary of the best points of each one in this review:
- Della Stainless Steel Portable Countertop Icemaker makes up to 48 pounds of ice a day in small, medium, or large cube sizes. It takes about 6 minutes to make a batch of twelve. It’s very simple to operate and warns if the water reservoir needs a refill. It comes with an ice scoop and is UL-listed for safety.
- Avalon Bay AB-ICE26S Portable Ice Maker makes up to 26 pounds of ice per day in batches of nine small or large cubes. It has a drain on the bottom to let out leftover water and it comes with its own ice scoop. Avalon Bay offers a variety of body colors.
- Igloo ICE103 Counter Top Ice Maker makes up to 26 pounds of small, medium, or large ice cubes per day. It takes about 6 minutes to make a batch. The removable ice basket holds up to 2.2 pounds so you can let it fill for a few batches before emptying it.
When I began looking for an ice maker, I had to assess how much ice my household is likely to consume. If you’re like my home where every drink must have ice and everyone loves homemade ice cream and smoothies, consider getting the Della ice maker.
48 pounds of ice per day has saved us a lot of room in the freezer.
If you plan to take your portable ice maker to events, how much demand will there be? You may need Della’s 48-pound capacity to keep up. It will save you money in the long run because you won’t be running to the store to buy more ice.
If you have a small household or less demand for ice, or if you only plan to use your ice maker once in a while, you may be very happy with either the Igloo or the Avalon Bay.
The advantage of the Igloo is its removable ice basket while the Avalon Bay comes in an assortment of colors.
Thank you for reading this review today. I hope it helps you select the best countertop ice maker for your home and family.
Cheers to you!
