Our family saves money on power bills by hanging things to dry on a rack instead of putting them in the dryer.
Since jeans tend to shrink, my wife prefers to let them air dry. Then we’ve also air-dried our curtains and even socks and underwear on the clothes drying rack.
Before we had the Metaltex Vulcano Drying Rack, we made do with hangers or by tossing things over the shower curtain rod. But this folding clothes dryer is a much better solution.
I’d like to tell you more about it in the review below, then mention some other models we considered buying instead.
Best Clothes Drying Rack Reviews
Metaltex USA Inc. Vulcano Drying Rack
Out of all the drying racks, I found the Metaltex Vulcano to be the best value for the money and it is the best clothes drying rack in my opinion.
It stands tall enough to hang shirts and opens up wide enough to support area rugs or a queen-size comforter. But if we only have a few items, we don’t have to extend the wings, so it takes up less space.
To be specific, the Vulcano drying rack measures 71 inches long by 39 inches tall and 22 inches wide, but it folds up to a compact 53 by 6 by 23 inches in size.
When folded, there is a lock that keeps it closed, so it doesn’t flop open by accident.
While the frame is metal, it’s coated with smooth epoxy paint to resist rusting.
But there is one downside to the Vulcano.
The crossbars are spot-welded underneath the frame. I noticed that some online reviews report that customers had bars that broke off at the weld points.
We haven’t had this problem yet, though.
- Rack has space for lots of clothes, towels, and even large items
- Epoxy coating resists rust
- Frame folds up for compact storage
- Crossbars are spot-welded to the frame, making them potentially a weak spot
We liked the Metaltex Vulcano because it’s large enough to dry big items and we have the space for when it’s fully extended.
But if you have less room to spare, you might prefer the next drying rack below.
AmazonBasics Foldable Drying Rack
While we considered the AmazonBasics Foldable Drying Rack a smart buy for the money, it just wasn’t large enough for my family’s needs.
If you have limited space, you might find that it fits perfectly into your bathtub or a corner out of the way.
This drying rack stands 41-3/4-inches tall by 29-1/2-inches wide and 14-1/2-inches thick.
The bars on top are close enough together that you can lay out a sweater or place shoes to dry.
Then each bar below that is staggered to make room for towels, socks, or underwear.
The overall weight that the rack can support is 32 pounds total.
The steel frame is coated with epoxy to resist rust and avoid snagging delicate fabrics.
And when it’s not in use, it folds up flat.
Should there be a problem, Amazon offers a 1-year limited warranty.
- Rack has eleven bars total and supports up to 32 pounds of weight
- Epoxy coating resists rust and protects delicate clothes
- Frame folds up accordion-style for storage
- 1-year limited warranty
- Not ideal for drying longer items like sheets or jeans
There is another option below if you like the heavy-duty design of the AmazonBasics but want more room to hang clothes.
CRESNEL Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Clothes Drying Rack
CRESNEL’s sturdy clothes drying rack is an attractive option if you want something sized between the Vulcano we purchased and the AmazonBasics model above. It’s built of stainless steel and comes with a 1-year warranty.
Like the other racks, this one folds up for storage. When fully extended, it measures 58 inches long by 24 inches wide and 40 inches tall.
One of the most interesting features of the CRESNEL is the addition of bars at the bottom. If you’re in the habit of washing slippers or shoes, you might find this to be very helpful. The rack even comes with shoe hooks you can remove when you don’t need them.
Finally, the way in which CRESNEL attaches the bars to the frame appears to be superior. They aren’t welded on like those of the Vulcano.
- Room to dry larger items as well as shoes or sweaters
- Stainless steel frame resists rust
- Rack folds up for storage
- 1-year limited warranty
- Lack of an epoxy coating may lead to rust down the road
Finally, if you’re in a hurry to dry your clothes, you might enjoy the next rack instead.
MAYKKE Arrabelle 100W Electric Clothes Drying Rack
Our final pick is the Arrabelle heated clothes drying rack from MAYKKE.
It only uses 100W of electricity, similar to running a desktop computer. And it’s UL-certified for safety.
While the two exterior bars on the sides are not heated, the six interior ones are.
If you live in a humid place, this kind of rack will significantly speed up the time it takes to air-dry your clothing.
It stands 29-1/8-inches tall and measures 37 inches long by 20-11/16-inches wide. While it’s built from lightweight, rust-resistant aluminum, it has the appearance of stainless steel.
- Six bars are heated while two are not to accommodate delicate clothes
- Only consumes 100W
- Frame folds up for storage
- Only one area for drying items, might not be large enough for a full load
Criteria to choose the best clothes drying rack
When we began looking for a clothes drying rack, we had these two requirements:
- Large enough to fit a full load or a comforter from the bed
- Foldable for storage when not in use
One other feature we wanted was an epoxy coating to protect against rust, but this wasn’t a deal-breaker.
Instead of hanging damp items from hangers, we wanted to dry everything in one place. That meant that most of all we needed a rack with enough space.
The Metaltex Vulcano fits our needs in this regard.
Then, all the racks we considered buying a fold up to store out of the way against a wall or in a closet. Some are just more compact than others.
I’ll give you a quick overview of the highlights of each clothes drying rack.
First, the Metaltex has the most extensive area with the most bars for drying.
If you’re tight on horizontal space, you might prefer the AmazonBasics rack instead.
Or a good compromise would be the CRESNEL rack that includes a shelf at the bottom with bars for shoes.
Finally, your clothes will dry faster if you use the Arrabelle heated electric rack.
In conclusion, I hope the reviews helped you decide on the best clothes drying rack for your family uses.
Although it seems like a simple item, getting the right fit for your needs will help make your laundry day more manageable.
