It was time to update our vanity mirror in the bathroom. My wife and I wanted a magnifying makeup mirror with a light. It would make it easier for her to apply makeup, and for all of us in the family to do facial care like shaving.
Top 2 Magnifying Makeup Mirrors In This Review
We researched magnifying mirrors to find the best one for our bathroom. We recently purchased an excellent makeup organizer that my wife has been enjoying, so we wanted a mirror that would mount on the wall near where we placed the organizer.
I’d like to tell you about the top two mirror brands and styles that we found. We considered both a 5x magnification mirror as well as one with multiple magnifications. I’ll begin with the mirror I purchased for our home.
Best Magnifying Makeup Mirrors Reviews
simplehuman 8 inch Sensor-Activated Lighted 5x Magnification (3 versions)
The simplehuman magnifying mirror is definitely superior to the old magnifying mirror we had.
My wife loves this new mirror with bright, natural light. It makes it easy for her to apply makeup and do facial care. The surgical-grade Tru-Lux LED system simulates natural sunlight so colors indoors look like they will outside under the sun.
She also enjoys the 5x magnification. It’s perfect to see fine details as well as her whole face at once. The 8-inch disk is just the right size. The swing arm adjusts to different positions and the mirror tilts to help everyone in the family have access to the mirror even though it’s mounted on the wall.
I’m a fan of the LED light because it operates with a sensor. The sensor turns it on and off automatically. When anyone is in front of the mirror, the light stays on. When that person is done and walks away, the light powers off.
The model we purchased is rechargeable with the USB cable and power adapter that come in the box. A small LED indicator at the bottom of the mirror warns when the charge is low. So far the battery is lasting about 4 to 5 weeks before it needs to go on the charger. The LED light around the mirror disk can last up to 100,000 hours, or years of use. I’ll never have to replace it like a regular light bulb.
There are just a couple of small cons to the simplehuman mirror. For one, it only has
For one, it only has 5x magnification. There is no alternate side with normal magnification. But this isn’t a big problem because I mounted it in the bathroom near the regular mirror above the sink.
The other small con is that there is no override for the sensor. It’s possible to turn off the light with the power switch but that also turns off the sensor.
Besides the rechargeable wall-mounted version I purchased for my home, there are two other models of the same mirror (countertop and wall mounted with hard wired). simplehuman provides a 5-year warranty on all three versions.
The second style is a countertop mirror that is rechargeable and has a weighted stand. You can move it wherever you need it to be.
The third version is a wall-mounted hard-wired mirror. It runs off household electricity and is not rechargeable. You must wire it into a junction box because there’s no power cord for a wall outlet.
Here is a quick summary of the pros and cons of the simplehuman magnifying mirror:
- LED light is bright and makes colors look like they would in sunlight
- 5x magnification and 8-inch mirror disk shows fine details of the whole face
- Sensor turns light on and off automatically to save energy
- LED light bulbs last up to 100,000 hours before burning out
- Adjustable swing arm and tilting disk
- 3 versions—countertop/rechargeable, wall-mounted/rechargeable, and hard-wired/wall-mounted
- Rechargeable versions last up to 5 weeks before needing a charge
- LED indicator shows when a charge is needed and when the charging is done
- 5-year warranty
- No sensor override, mirror is either on with the sensor engaged, or off with no sensor engaged
- No normal magnification and no high magnification, only 5x
In our opinion, the simplehuman magnifying mirror is the best one for our home. If you aren’t sure that this is the best mirror for your needs, we found another one we liked while we were researching.
I’ll tell you about it below.
Jerdon JP7510N 8-Inch Wall Mount Makeup Mirror with 10x and 15x Magnification
The Jerdon JP7510N is a wall-mounted mirror similar to ones you may have seen in hotels or on a cruise ship.
In fact, Jerdon sells this very mirror to those kinds of businesses. It’s popular because it has three options for magnification.
One side shows 1x, or normal view. The mirror is 8-inches in diameter so you can see your whole face at once. Flip the mirror over for 10x with a small circle of 15x magnification. That makes for very detailed viewing indeed.
Like our simplehuman mirror, the Jerdon is mounted on the wall. The adjustable swing arm is 13.5 inches long. It swivels a full 360 degrees and the disk tilts to any angle.
The nickel finished on the frame is resistant to rust so this mirror should look great for years to come.
Unlike the simplehuman mirror, the Jerdon has no light. As a result, this mirror is less expensive than the simplehuman models. It comes with a one-year warranty.
- Normal 1x, 10x, and 15x magnification
- 8-inch disk reflects a whole face at one
- 13.5-inch adjustable swing arm with ability to tilt the mirror itself
- Nickel finish resists rust
- No light
- Wall-mounting requires a sturdy or special hardware to support the weight of the mirror
- Only a 1-year warranty
Now that you’ve seen the reviews for my top choices.
Top 3 Comparison
I will tell you the criteria I used to find my best magnifying makeup mirror.
5 Criteria we used to find the best magnifying makeup mirror
My wife and I wanted the best magnifying mirror for our home, so we did quite a bit of research. We considered product descriptions as well as user reviews. This led to us creating a list of the criteria we needed to make a decision.
- Easy to install
- Light (or no light)
- Power source (for lighted models)
We choose 5x magnification as our minimum requirement. We weren’t concerned about choosing a mirror with normal magnification because we have one. Higher than 5x magnification would have been nice to have, but was not necessary for us.
We like the wall-mounted mirror we chose because it adjusts to so many positions and we don’t have to hold it to use it.
I prefer household items that are easy to install. In the case of the simplehuman mirror, it wasn’t hard to mount it to the wall. If you don’t wish to put holes in your wall, it comes in a countertop standalone version.
My wife wanted a mirror with a light and I agreed with her. We especially like the natural, energy-efficient lighting of the simplehuman mirror.
Finally, I didn’t want to have to wire a mirror to household mains power. I like the fact that our mirror is rechargeable.
I would like to recap here the best features of each mirror that I reviewed.
The simplehuman mirror offers only 5x magnification but includes a bright surgical-grade LED light. This light mimics natural sunlight so it’s easy to apply makeup perfectly. The countertop or wall-mounted versions are rechargeable, or there is a wall-mounted version that wires into a household electrical system. The 8-inch disk shows your entire face at once. The swing arm and tilting disk adjust to an infinite number of positions.
The wall-mounted Jerdon JP7510N offers 1x, 10x, and 15x magnification. It has no light. The swing arm and tilting mirror disk adjust to any position. The nickel finish keeps rust at bay.
If you have no need for a lighted mirror, take a look at the Jerdon JP7510N
